Back pain is a common complaint in the general population. It is estimated that approximately 80% of the total population will experience pain in the back at some time in their life. Fortunately, most of those cases resolve without surgical treatment. Surgical treatment of back problems can vary depending on many of the following factors:
-
The nature of the actual problem causing the pain
- The severity and frequency of the pain
- If and in what way the nerves in the back are affected
- The response to non-operative measures to treat the pain
As long as the nerves in the back are functioning properly, surgery is considered only after conservative (non-operative) treatment has been tried and failed. Conservative treatment may include activity or lifestyle modifications, medications, physical therapy or injections.
