Our Physician Assistants

Physician AssistantsPhysician Assistants (PAs) are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine under physician supervision. PAs provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. Their duties may include obtaining medical histories, performing physical exams, ordering and interpreting tests, providing education, writing prescriptions and assisting in surgery.

During their training, PAs are taught by physicians to diagnose and treat medical problems through therapeutic and/or surgical procedures. After graduating from college, PAs continue their education for two or more years in classroom, laboratory and clinical instruction. This is followed by rotations in family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine and geriatric medicine.

Following graduation, PAs take a national certification exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. To obtain licensure, PAs must graduate from an accredited school and pass the certifying exam. To maintain licensure, PAs must complete similar continuing medical education requirements as physicians.
